Tour Event 2 2009

Scottish Ladies TourA good turnout was expected and materialized for Event No. 2 of the Jacques Scottish Ladies Blackball Tour which was once again held in partnership with Riley Clubs in Scotland. This time the venue was Ledard Road, Glasgow where Event 1 winner Linda Gillies travelled from Inverness looking for her second tour title of the year.

Some very tasty ties at this stage of the tournament with Ladies B team manager Kim Black up against a very promising player in Laura Colquhoun. Laura played impressively and secured a 6-3 victory. Gemma Keenan (Non Such Pool Club) was against Joanne Macpherson who had made the trip from Inverness for the event, Joanne progressed with a hard fought 6-4 victory. Louise Hillman was next up against Denise Laing, a very good match to watch with Denise winning the deciding frame to progress into the last 16. Pauline Selkirk (quarter finalist from Event 1) was playing Alloa’s Sandra Bell in a tough to call match, another final frame shoot-out with Sandra progressing to the next round. Gemma Clyde defeated Katie Black by 6 frames to 3. Two a team internationalists met in this round with Gaynor McHaffie from Scotland playing Sarah Trudgett from England. This was a very good match, Sarah took an early lead only for Gaynor to pull it back and take it to a final frame decider. Sarah cleared the table and progressed to the last 16. EBA World Championship finalist Leanne Evans defeated Shetland’s Amanda Cutt by 6 frames to 0. Diane Colville defeated fellow Ayrshire player Rae McClymont by 6 frames to 1. Jenny Lawson was playing Heather Stewart (congratulations from us all Heather, pregnant and expecting a December baby ), Jenny played well winning by 6 frames to 2. Kathy Paton against Krystyna Goudie was the next match and Kathy used her experience to win by 6 frames to 3. Vandana Hegde against Katie Paterson was another match that went to the wire, in a tense affair V secured her last 16 spot with a 6-5 win. Shetland’s Jackie Williamson also booked her last 16 slot with a very good 6-4 win over Fiona Herd.

A very impressive Linda Gillies strolled to the quarter finals with a comprehensive 6-0 victory over Laura Colquhoun; she set up a clash with fellow a team internationalist Denise Laing who at this stage defeated Joanne Macpherson by 6 frames to 4. Sandra Bell continued her winning ways with a very good 6-3 victory over Gemma Clyde. Tie of the round was Yvonne Ewing against Sarah Trudgett. A match that went to the final frame, Yvonne held her nerve after being given a chance by Sarah to take the match and progressed to the quarter finals. Leanne Evans defeated Gillian Hayes by 6 frames to 2 and set up a quarter final against Diane Colville who defeated Jenny Lawson by 6 frames to 3. Kathy Paton and Yvonne Saunders both progressed to the quarter finals, defeating Vandana Hedge and Jackie Williamson respectively, both by 6 frames to 1.

The quarter finals put Linda Gillies against Denise Laing, the match was balanced at 3-3 when Linda showed how determined she was to win two tours in succession and won the next three to secure her semi final place. Sandra Bell was against Yvonne Ewing in the second quarter final, Yvonne came through this match by 6 frames to 0 to set up a semi final clash with good friend and team mate Linda Gillies. Diane Colville played extremely well in defeating Leanne Evans by 6 frames to 3, the quote being from watching spectators was “Diane played exceptionally well in that match”, well done Diane. She was joined in the semi final by Yvonne Saunders who, according to Kathy “was gifted her chance”. Yvonne gratefully accepted, defeating Kathy Paton by 6 frames to 5.

Tour 1 winner Linda Gillies was up against Yvonne Ewing in the first semi final. Yvonne played a fantastic 2 in 1 to take the first frame and quickly took a 3-0 lead. Linda showed all her class and pegged the match back to level it at 3-3. Yvonne took the next two frames to be one away from the final, however Linda once again pegged back her deficit and had a chance to level the match, and she missed the black leaving Yvonne a ball over the bag to progress to the final. The second semi final was another good, albeit completely different match with Diane Colville playing Yvonne Saunders. Again Diane took an early lead which Yvonne clawed back, both players were cueing very well and this semi final had deciding frame written all over it. True to form, it went to the decider and Yvonne held her nerve to progress to the final.

The final was played between Yvonne Ewing and Yvonne Saunders. A good standard by both players in the final with Yvonne Ewing looking the sharper throughout, she secured her first tour win of the season with a very impressive 6-1 victory over Yvonne Saunders. Well done Yvonne Saunders in reaching the final and congratulations to Yvonne Ewing on winning Tour Event 2 of the season J

Another very successful tour event for the ladies, thank you to Howard Miller (Riley’s), Jacques and the staff/management of The Riley Club at Ledard Road in Glasgow for hosting the event. The tables were first class and the staff were absolutely fantastic, all credit to Carol and her staff. I am sure we are all looking forward to the next event which is being held on Saturday 5th September, 2009 in Riley’s Dunfermline.

On behalf of the Scottish Ladies I would like to give Paul Preston (SPA Coach) a massive thank you for coming along to our tour event yesterday (20th June) in Rileys, Ledard Road. He came along and stayed the majority of the day giving advice and guidance to the ladies who ranged from new players to experienced internationalists, all of whom benefited from his advice. The best accolade I can give is after the ladies spent some time with Paul, they came and asked when the next session was. Special mention also to Mrs PP (Helen) who also gave up her time to come along, patience of a saint lol. So thank you Paul for giving up your Saturday and I am confident when I say "roll on the next session".
