Scottish Ladies Tour Event One 2008

Scottish Ladies Tour

Forty one players had registered their intention of playing in the 2008 Blackball Ladies Pool Tour which is once again being held in Pennies Bar, Falkirk. The tour is mandatory for all Scotland Ladies International Players with the World Masters Championships in Bridlington just around the corner a good turnout was expected.

Again this year a few new players have entered the tour and I am pleased to see new talent continuing to emerge throughout the ladies game in Scotland, long may this continue.

Elaine Campbell and Yvonne Saunders

Kim Black was first up against Roda Young (new); Kim showed her experience and came through by 6-3. Angela Gow (new) was up against Alice Horne (new) and Angela came through, winning by 6-2. Joanne Macpherson was next up against Carol Hunter and it was good to see Joanne playing really well, winning by 6 frames to 1. Angie Mackay was playing another newcomer, Kate McCormick with Angie proving to be too strong this time, winning by 6 frames to 1. Karlyn Coghill from Inverness was next up against Katie Black with Karlyn winning by 6 frames to 3.

Elaine Campbell played Jackie McIntyre and progressed with a 6-2 victory. Leanne Evans played Sandra Bell with both players in good form this was a very close match, Leanne came though, winning 6 frames to 4. Kim Black was up against Angela Gow; Kim won this one by 6 frames to 4. Joanne Macpherson played brilliantly again, winning 6-2 against Fiona Herd. Pauline Selkirk beat Tammy Armstrong by 6 frames to 4. Denise Laing progressed with a fine 6-4 victory over Jenny Lawson. Kathy Paton and Karlyn Coghill was another close match, which Kathy managed to win 6-4. Jane Doig progressed to the last 16 defeating Yvonne Ewing by 6 frames to 4.

Last 16

Elaine Campbell was up against Lynsey Selkirk, she won this one comfortably by 6 frames to 1. Sandra Diamond beat Katie Paterson by 6 frames to 2. Gillian Hayes beat Kim Black by 6 frames to 4. Denise Laing also progressed to the last 16 with a 6-2 victory over Pauline Selkirk. Yvonne Saunders continued her recent fine form with a 6-4 victory over Angie Mackay. Jane Doig also progressed to the last 8 with a 6-3 victory over Kathy Paton.

The quarter finals put Elaine Campbell against Leanne Evans, Leanne took a 5-2 lead but Elaine showed true determination and came through on a final frame decider. Gillian Hayes was up against fellow A team internationalist Sandra Diamond, Gill came through this one 6-4. Joanne Macpherson beat a team player Denise Laing by 6 frames to 4 and Yvonne Saunders looked in impressive form, defeating Jane Doig by 6 frames to 1.

Elaine Campbell was up against Gillian Hayes, a strange match by all accounts (quote from Gill?), one which Elaine won by 6 frames to 4. The second semi final was between Yvonne Saunders and Joanne Macpherson, this match could have gone either way. Yvonne managed to hold her nerve to progress to her second final in succession.

The final was played between a much improved Yvonne Saunders and the experience of Elaine Campbell. Elaine took a 5-1 lead and it looked like she would cruise to win the first tour event of the season. Yvonne however had other ideas, she all of a sudden took off and got the match back to 5-4, she had a good chance to take the final to a final frame but one miss was all Elaine needed to secure her first tour title of the season. Well done to Elaine for winning the first event of the season, brilliant.

All in all, another very successful first tour event for this season. Thanks go to Davy Anderson and the staff at Pennies for hosting the event and I am sure we are all looking forward to the next event which is being held on Saturday 24thMay, 2008.

14-1 was the plate competition at this event. Yvonne Ewing won this after a close competition between all players, a good laugh and something I am sure will be used in the future.
